Education at Sea

Wisconsin teachers spent time outdoors this summer learning about aquatic ecosystems, Great Lakes sailing, and water quality.

Working with James Lubner, UW Sea Grant Advisory Services Education Specialist, a group of 26 teachers enjoyed a week-long program that included  studying Lake Michigan aboard a sailing vessel.

Aboard the Inland Seas, the teachers learned to take water and “critter” samples and took turns navigating and steering the ship. The program, sponsored by the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association, also immersed the teachers in historical songs of the Great Lakes and presentations about Great Lakes shipwrecks by Jeff Gray of the State Historical Society.

A separate program, coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, gave teachers in both the Madison and Rice Lake areas the opportunity to investigate aquatic issues.

Lubner led sessions for one of the five days of the program and noted that some teachers even caught some great fish.
