New Weston Scholar Named

Joseph Weber, an undergraduate in medical microbiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been awarded the Carl J. Weston Memorial Scholarship.

Weber works as a lab assistant with Dr. Charles Lehner, a Sea Grant-supported researcher whose work is identifying diving practices that pose unacceptable risks. The overall goal of the work is to improve the safety and efficiency of scuba diving.

Weber recently worked on a project focusing on the risks of decompression sickness during escape from a submarine or scientific saturation habitat, such as a submerged research facility.

“Joseph’s contribution to the project was significant and has been recognized with co-authorship of an abstract on decompression sickness risk in emergency escape for presentation to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society,” Lehner wrote in his letter of support.

The Wisconsin Sea Grant program in diving physiology focuses on the development of methods to minimize the frequency of decompression sickness to help reduce injuries and fatalities. It is one of the oldest such programs in the world.
