Salmonid Genetics Group to Form

Salmonid geneticists in the Great Lakes area and the East Coast will form a new working group, similar to the successful Coastwide Salmonid Genetics Group of West Coast scientists.

A Coho SalmonThis decision was part of several recommendations proposed by a recent workshop held at UW-Milwaukee. The workshop, coordinated by UW Sea Grant-supported geneticist Ruth Phillips, was held on October 1-2 and attended by the principal investigators from the major trout genetics laboratories in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario.

Other recommendations included standardization of microsatellite loci for Salvelinus species, better coordination between Canadian and U.S. scientists, and funding of mapping projects including production of crosses to examine quantitative trait loci for important traits.

For more information, email Ruth Phillips or call her at (414) 229-4909.
