Dr. Herman Gons
KNAW-NIOO Centre for Limnology, Nieuwersluis, The Netherlands .
Dr. Gons graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1972 with subjects in General Microbiology and Aquatic Ecology. During his PhD research with Dr. Luuc Mur at the Laboratory for Microbiology in Amsterdam he studied the light energy requirements for growth and maintenance of the planktonic alga Scenedesmus. The generally observed switch from green algae to cyanobacteria at advanced eutrophication prompted this study. In January 1977 he moved to the Limnological Institute at Nieuwersluis for studies of the functioning of epiphyton and epipelon in the carbon cycle of the relatively deep, mesotrophic lake Vechten. In 1983 he started with a large team of researchers a restoration study of a highly eutrophic, shallow lake. Herman was particularly interested in sediment-water interactions due to the great wind effect in this lake, and designed laboratory-scale enclosures for studies of photosynthesis and growth of natural phytoplankton. After his appointment as a senior scientist in the Department of Microbial Ecology of the Centre for Limnology in 1993 he worked on interactions between cyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria and protozoa. His recent interests include the control of viruses in planktonic communities and application of optical teledetection methods.
