An archaeologist examines the windlass -- a ratcheted drum for raising and lowering an anchor. Wisconsin Historical Society archaeologists discovered that the anchor was being prepared to be lowered when the vessel sank, suggesting the captain hoped to escape the storm in the protection of a harbor.
