(Moxocephalus thompsoni)

Length: 4-6 inches [10-15 cm]
Weight: 0.35-0.85 ounces [10-25 grams]
Coloring: head, back, and sides gray-brown with dark brown to green mottling; lower region of head and belly whitish
Common Names: sculpin, Great Lakes fourhorn sculpin, lake sculpin, deepwater blob Great Lakes Habitat: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, Lake Erie


Sculpins are characterized by extremely wide, flattened heads and wide pectoral fins. In fact, this fish is sometimes called a "miller's thumb" because its broad, flat head resembles the  thumb of a miller who had the misfortune to have his thumb flattened between millstones.
