  GIS & Coastal Hazards

There are two primary types of natural hazards affecting Wisconsin's Great Lakes shore:

  • Erosion of coastal bluffs, banks, beaches and near shore lake beds; and,
  • Flooding from upland runoff, high lake levels and storm-induced waves.

An important goal of this topic is the application of GIS to model and visualize coastal erosion and flooding in the state.

  Activities

3D Visualization of Coastal Resources
This website explores the use of World Construction Set software to visualize development along coastal bluffs and how bluff erosion may impact coastal structures, including:

  • Development of a computer-based visualization tool to show existing development in a three-dimensional view for a section of Lake Michigan bluff in Ozaukee County.
  • Development of a visualization tool to view how Lake Michigan bluffs have eroded over time using digital elevation models derived from historical photography.
  • Exploration of methods for visualization of bluff erosion into the future.

Visualizing Coastal Erosion on the Great Lakes -- Ozaukee County Wisconsin
Information gathered by scientists about coastal processes is often very technical in nature and, therefore, difficult to communicate to coastal landowners and local officials.  UW Sea Grant is collaborating on a project, headed by Prof. Mark Harrower of the UW-Madison Geography Department, that is designed to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and public perception by utilizing Web-based geovisualization tools and remotely-sensed data to present integrated and scientifically informed views of coastal erosion.  The project, set on the Lake Michigan shore, will create an educational website that utilizes cutting-edge Web-based geovisualization tools and techniques to represent dynamic coastal processes, allowing users to explore the factors that lead to coastal erosion.

Coastal Hazards Resource Guide
This resource guide consolidates information about natural hazards affecting the Great Lakes coast in Wisconsin.  It includes general information and links to other sites about techniques to manage or mitigate coastal hazards and strategies developed by government institutions to address coastal hazards in Wisconsin.

Coastal Erosion GIS Application for the Town of Mosel, Sheboygan County
Geographic information systems (GIS) may be utilized to more effectively manage development in the coastal zone. This GIS application assesses coastal erosion impacts and explores management issues related to shoreland development in the Town of Moselin northern SheboyganCounty.
