Harbor Centre Marina in Sheboygan was recently recognized for its environmentally responsible business practices to minimize water pollution by being re-certified as a Wisconsin Clean Marina. Harbor Centre Marina has been a clean marina for nine years.
A new Wisconsin Clean Marina Program certification process was launched in July 2010, and many Wisconsin marinas have since taken steps to voluntarily adopt practices to become certified. Harbor Centre Marina was one of the first marinas certified through this process.
“Becoming a clean marina only holds value if the standards we put in place are consistent year after year,” said General Manager Matt Bauer. “Re-certifying our marina shows our commitment to maintaining those standards and holding our staff and boaters accountable to them.”
Marinas and related industries and services contribute more than $2.7 billion to Wisconsin’s economy. Through the Wisconsin Clean Marina Program, marinas will prevent pollution and protect fish, wildlife and public health, knowing that a cleaner environment is important to their boating clientele, their livelihood and Wisconsin’s coastal communities.
Harbor Centre Marina has recently renovated their Ship’s Store and boater facility area and continue to make improvements to the facility to improve the experience of boaters.
The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program is administered by the Wisconsin Marine Association with assistance from Wisconsin Sea Grant and the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. Additional partners include the University of Wisconsin-Extension Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources-Office of the Great Lakes and the U.S. Coast Guard.
