The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs are starting the fifth year of science café-type evening talks about the St. Louis River Estuary in October. Control of the invasive weed, phragmites, in the estuary is the topic of the first River Talk of the 2017-18 season. These informal public talks will be held monthly through May at the Reserve’s new Estuarium interpretive center on Barker’s Island in Superior.
“Phrag in the Bag: Phragmites Control in the St. Louis River Estuary” is scheduled for Wed., Oct. 11, 7 p.m. at the Estuarium (3 Marina Dr., Superior, Wis.), Brandon Van Tassel with the Duluth Stream Corps will describe why the presence of phragmites is a problem, and current efforts to control it.
The other talks will be held on Nov. 8, Jan. 10, Feb. 14, March 13, April 11, and May 9. The March 13 talk will be held in conjunction with the St. Louis River Summit.
