Wisconsin’s fishing season is just around the corner, with hook-and-line fishing for many species beginning May 5.
Three resources from Wisconsin Sea Grant can enhance anglers’ fishing trips this season. Those resources help anglers have more success catching fish and an easier time identifying what they catch.
A free guide prepared by Sea Grant offers tips on selecting lure colors. The four-page guide helps anglers understand how colors are perceived underwater by fish. Water depth, water clarity and how much light is available influence which colors can be seen, how bright they appear and at what depth colors fade.
Sea Grant also offers a popular “Fish ID” guide that is available via website and mobile app. To use the web version or download for Android devices, visit Sea Grant’s website. A version for Apple devices can be downloaded directly from Apple’s App Store.
The Fish ID guide allows users to search by snout shape, tail shape, body shape and pattern and other features.
Those looking for tasty ideas for cooking local fish can always access Eat Wisconsin Fish, which offers a variety of recipes using fish found in the Great Lakes Region.
